Inspiration for Basil Soda’s 2011 Spring Summer Couture Collection

For this collection I drew inspiration from the combination of forms in the Hybrid Modern Sculptures of the late 19 and early 20th centuries. Specifically I was interested in the works of Thomas Heine, Pierre Roche, Jacob Epstein and Maria Martins. These sculptures were done at the end of the age of classical restraint and were an examination of form, content and conflict. The inner conflicts of good vs. evil, of man against nature of desire vs. restraint were freely put to bronze and stone.

Sculptures of humans, botanical elements and animals though far from each other in nature, were combined sometimes with elegance and sometimes untenable frailty but always with a correctness of unity, symmetry and harmony.
